Born August 25, 1985 and raised in Canandaigua, NY Paul lived a very active, healthy life. He developed a love for motor-bike sports and competitive swimming. He thrived and excelled in these activities. As anyone would hope for a teenager, he survived the most challenging teen-age years with continued support of his family and friends. Little did Paul know, his biggest challenge was yet to come.

June 26, 2004 - After his High School Graduation Ceremony, Paul went to a party with his friends. Although he had played in this pond many times, and was a very experienced swimmer, Paul dove into the pond and collided with an unseen embankment. The impact shattered his C-7 vertebrae. Initial x-rays indicated his spinal cord was almost severed. Surgery on the following Monday revealed the encasing around the spine was not severed, but had been crushed, severely damaging critical spinal tissue. At this point, Paul is paralyzed from his chest down. He regained some feeling and gained 40% function in his left hand and 5-10% of his right. In August 2004 Paul discovered movement in one of his toes. In November 2004 he moved into a local (NY) therapy program and showed promise of activity in his abdominal area. Paul was evaluated for his eligibility to undergo a procedure which may restore the use of his legs and has been accepted!

To quote Uncle Ted, "Sometimes life throws a real twister at each of us. How we react to this is THE test of our character." Anyone who has had the privilege of spending time with Paul since his accident will tell you that he has displayed exemplary dignity and spirit. Paul has begun this journey with grace and determination. We are very confident that he will be able to take this situation and turn it into something great.

Paul simply says, "I'm going to walk again."
